Week 7

 Music

This week was all about progress and creating new material. With this we began by listening to different songs that we found individually and finalising our music choices as a group. The songs for each section are as follows:

Section 1 - A metronome at 120bpm

Section 2 - Vivaldi - The Four Seasons, Spring 1 (recomposed by Max Richter)

Section 3 - Hans Zimmer - 1976

Section 4 - Sound of game 'Halo'

Section 5 - Max Richter - Dona Nobis Pacem 2

Section 6 - Moonlight Sonata

Section 7 - Last Post

Creating Movement

We then used time to create for section 2. We started at the beginning of the track just at the end of the march section which we completed last week as we felt the diagonal line worked really well for how we were going to use the motif that Lucy and Erin created for this section. We began with that sequence as we felt it symbolised the message of "coming together" which is what we have titled this section. We then included movements that are mostly in unison which included planks and lunges and army crawls to symbolise training as we felt that would be the setting of this section as it is pre-fight therefore followed the timeline we have created. We then break into some acting with speech included to enhance to feeling of normal people to make the audience connect more with our characters. This came across very effectively when we performed it for the group at the end of the session and even managed to bring someone to tears which was a positive response for the message we are trying to put across to the audience. Here is a video of this.

Beginning Creation with Improvisation

We felt a bit unsure where to begin with the PTSD section (section 6) so we section ourselves to different layers of the music, three stuck to the base line and three used the melody as we are all fairly familiar with the song. We then improved and included some accumulation by keeping an eye on each other for some effect. Here is a video of this.

  1. This was very interesting to read! I love the idea of showing the soldiers personalities by adding speech so that the audience forms an emotional connection to the characters before they go into war! Are you happy with how the PTSD section turned out by using improvisation and accumulation? Will this section look similar in the final piece?

    1. Thank you for your comment and question. I'm really pleased with how are improvisation turned out and we have now developed this idea which you can now read about in my week 8 blog post. We kept a similar look but now we have choreographed some group work and accumulation so that it is planned rather then spontaneous however it was based on a spontaneous idea.

  2. I've really enjoyed watching the clips from your group choreography, it looks very effective and I can clearly see your stimulus within the movements! I also really like how you have used acting and speech to develop the characterisation. Have you faced any challenges with your choreography recently? If so, what?

    1. Thank you very much Mhairi, one of the challenges we've faced is having everyone available for rehearsal due to different classes, rehearsal and illness however we have worked around these difficulties by adapting sections and using time to create solo or household sections in our spare time at home.

  3. I love your music choices, they fit really well with the sections. I also really like your improvisation section as it doesn't feel like improvisation when watching it- its so effective and really evokes strong emotions from the audience. What movements do you think of/try to include when you are improvising to make sure your idea of PTSD comes across well?

    1. Thank you Caitlyn. For that section I tried to include movements such as sharply turning around as if I've been caught off-guard by a person or thought. I also wanted to include gestures or motifs from throughout the piece to show flash backs as that can be a symptom of PTSD.
