Week 1

Annotation

The task began with 5 stimuli all based around the theme of ‘the arts as a tool of political protest’. In small groups we annotated each picture with our thought’s ideas and questions, adding and expanding on the notes written prior to ours to establish sheets full of useful words to help inspire. We then chose a stimulus and picked 3 of the annotations to develop a phrase of movement.

Our Stimulus

Stolen by Adrian Brandon

We chose the image created by Adrian Brandon of Breonna Taylor titled "Stolen" as all were captivating but this one had such a creative method behind it. Brandon used the amount of years Taylor lived as minutes he could work with to create the painting. Taylor’s life was taken at the age of 26 therefore Brandon only had 26 minutes to create this. We thought the ideas of ‘cut short’, ‘unfinished’ and ‘taken’ were interesting and really described the message the artist was producing.

Challenges and What Went Well

We found a lot of inspiration in the word ‘taken’ and developed this idea by using accumulation to “take” the movement from one of the others in the group creating this wave effect. One of the challenges we faced was trying to focus more on the image rather then the story of Taylor as we were all very familiar with it and therefore found it difficult not to drift into a more narrative concept.

  1. It's really interesting to see how you developed your ideas from the annotations on the stimulus, to three inspiring words and then to a meaningful and effective use of a choreographic device. I think the idea of 'taking' movement could be very powerful for future choreography. Did you find this method of producing movement to be useful and may you use the idea of brainstorming thoughts and emotions around a stimulus again?

    1. Thank you for your kind comment Daisy. I did find it a useful tool although it can be time consuming. I think it would be useful for finding initial ideas once we have chosen a theme but not to be used over and over to save time for choreography.

  2. It's interesting to read about your ideas from the stimulus and how you developed these with choreographic devices. You mentioned that one of the challenges you faced was staying focussed and not drifting from the main concept you wanted to show. How will you avoid this in the future when choreographing for your group piece?

    1. Thank you Mhairi for your comment. This is a really good question, I will avoid this by concentrating on the stimulus and making sure all movement has a connection to the message.

  3. You have explained this task very well! I really like how you chose the word “taking” to create movement and added accumulation to create a wave effect! Was this task helpful? Would you use it again?

    1. Thank you Caitlin for your comment. I did find this task to be a useful way of creating however I'm not sure if I'd use it in the group piece as it takes a lot of preparation time.
