Week 3

 How to Create using Translation

To begin we lined up in small groups and faced away from the person at the front. This person was given a prompt word as a stimulus, for example 'line', 'gentle', 'slow', mine was 'falling' and we had to create an eight count phrase with this stimulus. The following person then had two chances to watch and learn and then they had to then teach it and it passes down the line until the final person who may only see it once before performing what they had taken  from the phrase.

Our Groups Experience

We had three people in our group so the first person repeated the exercise to come up with four phrases of eight counts each. We found that they almost all changed quite a lot and you could see how our personal styles had effected the outcome of the phrase depending on the order we were in. We found unusually that our third phrase did not change at all and we'd managed to perfectly regenerate it which was interesting.

Developing

 The next part of the task was to all learn the original versions of each phrase and the new versions and then link them together in an order that includes all eight phrases. We then made changes using choreographic techniques such as canon, reverse and slow-motion to make the piece more interesting to watch. In the video below you will see our final dance that we created.

  1. The layout of your blog is very clear and I like how you have used subheadings to show the reader the distinct tasks you had been assigned. Did you find it challenging to learn the small motif of the individual in front of you, especially if you only had one chance to watch?

    1. Thank you for your response Lucy. I did panic at first when I realised how difficult it was to copy someone's phrase with only one chance to see it however I soon remembered that that is all part of the process and that if it is copied exactly then you don't get the variation of phrases by the end.

  2. I really enjoyed watching the piece you created, it's clear to see how the movements relate to the word you were given. I liked how you changed patterns and spacing throughout the piece, it made it very interesting to watch! Do you think this is a technique you would use in your group choreography?

    1. Thank you for your question, I like this technique however I don't feel I would use it in my group as there are so many of us to create with that it would take up a large mass of the piece.

  3. I find it interesting how you used this choreographic device to make a group piece! I like how you added the technique of retrograde by reversing the phrase! Was this challenging to do? Would you use the translation task again when creating group choreography?

    1. Thank you for your comment. Yes we did struggle at first with the retrograde as it is such a short phrase it seemed complicated at first to reverse however we did accomplish it with persistence, and personally I feel it would become too much if we did this for our group piece as there are six of us and therefore would be much longer taking up a lot o the choreography.
