Week 2

 Stimulus

For this task we were required to bring in a stimulus to work with. Our group decided on this faux vine plant as we found it invoked a lot of ideas.

We then went around to each of the five stimuli that each group had picked and individually wrote words that came to mind when looking at them. We then discussed the words we picked all together to provide more ideas for the next part of the task which was to pick 3 words that inspired us from any of the stimuli for a random set of prompt words. We chose ‘Trust’, ‘Individuality’ and ‘Routed’.

Creating movement

The next part of the task was to develop 4 movements per word which we wrote down in order of how we made them. They were separate movements that had no link between them as to prepare us for the final stage of the task.

Dice Development

A twelve-sided dice was thrown 15 times to create a sequence of 15 numbers, some were repeated as this was done completely at chance, hence ‘the chance method’. We then placed the movements in the new order which I wrote down to help with the process. We then began working with the new pattern and making it work so that the movements flowed into each other.

Final Thoughts

I found this task to be a useful way of creating a phrase as it combined a tool for developing a stimulus with a tool for developing movements where we ended up with a long phrase where minimal pauses were required so is definitely one for saving time that would be spent over-thinking.

  1. I really enjoyed reading your blog and found the way you have set up your blog very easy to follow and creative with the images. I also love the fact you have included an end section of your blog called final thoughts and explored your own opinion. Would you use a task like this in developing your final choreography piece?
what ideas came from the faux vine plant?

    1. Thank you for your comment and questions Abi. I think it is definitely a tool that'll be useful when struggling to come up with movement. Especially as you can create long phases with it or shorter if needed. My group considered ideas such as nature and life, the process of photosynthesis and breath, we also thought it could symbolise not judging a book as it looks real but is actually plastic.

  2. This blog post is extremely clear, explaining to the reader the direct layout of the class, with detailed information about the tasks we had to complete. You mentioned that you had to create movement that was influenced by the words, yet they weren't allowed to join together. How did you find this specific task? Did you struggle to find movements that would represent specific words? If so how did you over come this?

    1. Thank you Storm for your comment. I think the main challenge was making the initial movements without linking them so to overcome this we made each taking a break in between to restart to be conscious not to create off of the ending of the last movement.

  3. This post is structured very well and it is clear to understand the technique you used in this lesson. When you joined the phrases together, was there any specific movements you used to connect them or any choreographic devices used?

    1. Thank you for your comment Mhairi, to join or phrases we decided to keep it simple as we changed the pattern we were placed in for each phrase therefore we used simple steps into the following formation.

  4. I find it interesting how you chose a faux vine plant as a stimulus as there are many different interpretations from that. Did the use of chance methods create any challenges? If you were to do this task again is there anything you would change?

    1. Thank you for your questions Caitlin. I found challenges in the creation of the movement but the rest of the task was straight forward which made for lots of progress once the initial steps were made. If I were to do this again I'd add a jump in for more levels and to add drama.
